Behaviour and Relationships

Our approach

Children do best when they feel safe, known and valued. Our approach to behaviour starts with relationships and with noticing what children get right.

Every day, we live The Kingshurst Way!

Our three values, Respect, Resilience and Aspiration, are used by every adult and every child, in every space. Children know what we expect because they hear the same words everywhere they go.

What it looks like when we get it right

Respect (every day, every space, everybody)
You'll see children listening to each other, speaking kindly, keeping hands, feet and objects safe, looking after our classrooms and including others in play and learning.

Resilience (try, learn, grow)
You'll see children sticking with something difficult, asking for help when they need it, using a strategy to reset and come back ready, and trying again after a mistake.

Aspiration (aim high, work hard, dream big)
You'll see children take pride in their work, choose a harder challenge, arrive ready to learn, and celebrate each other's success.

How we recognise it

Staff name the value behind a good choice, so children know exactly what they did well. For example: "You didn't give up. That's Resilience." We use Class Dojo to recognise this every day, and we share positive news with families through messages and phone calls home, not only when there is a concern.

Over time, children start to spot and name these behaviours in themselves and in each other. That is the goal.

When things go wrong

Everyone makes mistakes. We respond in four calm, consistent stages:

  1. Reminder: a quiet reminder of what we expect, linked to our values.
  2. Reset: the child moves to a different space to reset and get ready to learn again.
  3. Reflection Space: some time in our reflection space, then a return to learning.
  4. Supported Reflection: extra support from a member of our team before the child returns.

Afterwards, we talk it through with the child so they can put things right and move on.

Working with you

We will let you know if your child needs extra support to reset, and work with you to put the right support in place. If you have a worry, your child's class teacher is the best first point of contact. The sooner we know, the more we can help.
