Phonics & Reading

Shared Reading in Nursery

Each week the children will choose a book to bring home and share with you. Please take time to read this with your child a few times and discuss the characters, where the story is, what's happening in the story and why. Ask questions about their favourite part, how characters are feeling etc.

Parent video: Why read to your child?

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Reading and the EYFS

Reading, along with writing, makes up literacy, one of the four specific areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Reading's Early Learning Goal is:

  • Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

Please see our school Reading and Phonics page on the link below. Our parent page you will find helpful videos and advice for supporting your child's reading and phonics at home.
